How to Take Care of Your Teeth Immediately After Your Dental Implant Surgery

Control Bleeding

Although minimal bleeding is expected after the surgery, it may continue for several hours. You can stop bleeding by folding two pieces of damp, sterile gauze, placing them over the surgical site, and gently biting down to apply pressure to it for around 30 to 60 minutes. Repeat this method for up to ten hours until the bleeding stops.

Manage Pain and Swelling

Surgical pain usually kicks in after the effects of anesthesia wear out. While Ibuprofen is an over-the-counter pain medication, your dental care provider can also prescribe painkillers to ensure comfort.

Although you may experience some swelling following your treatment, it typically subsides after a few days. For the first 24 hours, minimize the swelling by holding a bag of frozen peas or ice packs wrapped in a towel on your cheek for up to 10 minutes at a time in 20-minute intervals. You may start warm compress application after 48 hours.

Take it Easy

You'll want to take plenty of rest with your head propped up on two to three pillows when lying down. Avoid engaging in strenuous physical activities to reduce the risk of bleeding. If your oral surgeon used sutures or stitches for the procedure, expect them to fall out or dissolve within the first week following your appointment.

It's worth noting that the recovery process following implant surgery can potentially extend beyond simply feeling better.

Don't Eat Until the Numbness Wears Off.

It's best to stick to cold drinks and stay away from food until the local anesthetic's numbing effects wear off. Moreover, you'll want to avoid consuming hot foods and beverages within the first 24 hours. Additionally, chew on the opposite side of your surgical site to avoid causing irritation to your tender gums and slowing down your healing process.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Keeping your mouth as clean as possible is crucial to a successful recovery process. For this reason, brushing your teeth on the evening of your surgery is best. However, you'll want to avoid touching the surgical site for the first few days.

You may rinse your mouth with warm salt water to eliminate bacteria and soothe discomfort. Add one teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water and rinse for at least 30 seconds before spitting out. Do this at least four to five times a day.

Quit Smoking

Since tobacco and nicotine constrict the blood vessels in your gum tissues, they limit blood flow to the surgical site. As a result, the tissues get less oxygen and nutrients that promote healing. For this reason, you'll want to quit smoking to reduce your risk of implant failure.
